At the beginning of the game, Odin declared that he didn’t want to fight against the heroes, and even hoped to persuade Atreus into working for him. The main task that Odin gave to Atreus was to find missing pieces of a broken mask and put them together. This mask was a very important object in God of War: Ragnarok, and Odin’s obsession with it is what motivated him throughout the game.

Why Was The Mask So Important To Odin
Before the events of God of War: Ragnarok, Odin found a small beam of light. From it, he sensed that he could obtain infinite knowledge by looking inside of it. However, when he did, he lost his right eye. Despite this, he refused to give up this goal, and believed that the mask he found alongside it could help him find the answers he sought.
Unfortunately for him, he only had one piece of the mask, which had text from a language he did not know written on it. He believed that the text would allow him to find the other pieces and, upon all the pieces being put together, he would achieve his goal and find a way to live beyond Ragnarok. This became an obsession he had for many years but couldn’t do anything about it - that is, until he met Atreus.
Atreus Helped Odin Find The Missing Pieces Of The Mask
At the beginning of God of War: Ragnarok, Odin invited Atreus to go to Asgard. While Atreus initially refused the invitation, he eventually decided to go, hoping that he would be able to stop a prophecy from happening that would see him working for Odin and killing Kratos. He thought that by manipulating Odin and doing what he wanted, while having the intention to actually help his family and friends, he’d be able to stop the prophecy from coming true.
When Atreus arrived at Asgard, Odin showed him the mask and asked him to translate the text, as Atreus knew how to read it. Odin also tried to convince him that by learning all the answers, they’d be able to change fate and that Atreus wouldn’t have to do anything he didn’t want to. Because of this, Atreus went on a quest with Odin’s relatives to locate the other pieces of the mask.
Atreus Betrayed Odin And Destroyed The Mask
At the end of the game, Atreus found all the pieces of the mask, but returned home with it rather than handing it over to Odin. Even more obsessed by the mask since it was completely restored, Odin attacked Atreus’ allies in an attempt to try to retrieve it, but they managed to keep it for themselves. Before the Allfather would see the mask again, Ragnarok had begun. During the final battle, Odin tried convincing Atreus to put the mask on and tell him what he learned from it.
Instead, Atreus broke the mask apart and the pieces were absorbed by the light. Outraged, Odin fought against the heroes one last time before they defeated him. With the mask being gone and Odin dying, the heroes had prevailed in the fight and Ragnarok came to an end. However, as Atreus’ journey will likely continue in the next game, some fans believe that the mask’s role in the God of War franchise has only just begun.
God of War: Ragnarok is available on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5.
