Based on the popular web series, Drunk History is the liquored-up narration of America’s history.
Comedy Central has reportedly decided to axe the show as the network moves away from live-action scripted shows and moves towards adult animation, per Variety.
The decision may come as a surprise to fans, as it had already been renewed for a seventh season, with pre-production already underway. But show bosses have now made the decision to pull the plug before filming.
Drunk History began as a web series but developed a cult following before moving to Comedy Central in 2013.
The show followed host Derek Waters, along with an ever-changing cast of actors and comedians, traveling across the country to present stories from every city, narrated by liquored up guests.
Waters is said to be continuing with Comedy Central to develop new projects.
Some stand out episodes of Drunk History over the last few years include “Frederick Douglass,” which starred Will Ferrell, Don Cheadle, and Zooey Deschanel and “Nellie Bly Goes Undercover at Blackwell’s Island” starring Laura Dern.
The Emmy-award winning series gained incredibly famous guest stars as it went on with Seth Rogen, Tiffany Haddish, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Mandy Moore, Jack Black, Michael Cera, Bob Odenkirk, Bill Hader, Connie Britton, Billie Joe Armstrong, Aubrey Plaza, Kirsten Dunst, Vanessa Hudgens and more.
A number of celebrities are mourning the show’s end online, with many celebrating the show for centering parts of history not as widely known.
Writer Charlotte Clymer tweeted: ““Drunk History” legitimately centered queer history, particularly trans and non-binary folks, in a way that was authentic, hilarious, and accessible. The show should have been continued. This really sucks.”
While comedian Ashley Nicole Black added: “I’m really gonna miss Drunk History. But actually I wouldn’t be surprised if another network picks it up.”
Comedian Amber Ruffin spoke fondly of her time appearing on Drunk History.
She tweeted: “Maaaan, @drunkhistory was legit educational and I was a superfan long before I did it. I’m completely in love with @derekwaterss and @Jeremykonner and I can’t wait for their next adventure! I have never before and will never again come anywhere close to being that drunk.”
The news of Drunk History’s demise comes a month after Comedy Central announced an expansive deal with Emmy Award-winning Mike Judge to reimagine MTV’s Beavis and Butt-Head.
