Maya Erskine and Anna Konkle’s comedy sees them portray 13-year-old versions of themselves as they try to navigate life in Middle School.

Newsweek takes a look at why the show is coming to an end and what will be next for its creators.

Why Has Pen15 Been Canceled?

Pen15 was first released in 2019, but the second season has been released in two parts over the span of a year because of the COVID pandemic.

The first seven episodes were released in September 2020, while an animated special episode came out in August 2021. The remaining seven will be shared on Friday, December 3.

Pen15 is said to be coming to an end because Erskine and Konkle feel they have reached the end of the story they had originally intended to write, according to reports from Variety.

A Hulu representative told the publication that the creators felt “the story they wanted to tell has come to an end with the upcoming second half of Season 2.”

But, fans will be delighted to know Hulu are keen to keep their options open.

The source added: “Hulu will continue to leave the door open for more Pen15 in the future and look forward to working with [Erskine and Konkle] again.”

Newsweek has contacted Hulu spokespeople for further comment.

Erskine and Konkle confirmed in an interview with The New Yorker that they had originally intended the show to be three seasons long, but the pandemic had forced them to change their plans.

The show earned an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Comedy in 2021, and it was also shortlisted for Outstanding Casting and Outstanding Writing the same year, but lost to Ted Lasso.

What’s Next for the Creators of Pen15?

Erskine and Konkle both welcomed children in early 2021, born two months apart, with the former having a son named Leon and the latter a daughter named Essie.

In terms of work, Erskine has an as-yet-untitled role in Disney+’s new Star Wars show Obi-Wan Kenobi, alongside Ewan McGregor.

Erskine added in the pair’s interview with The New Yorker that she also had a number of roles she was “not yet at liberty to talk about.”

Konkle, meanwhile, will be appearing in a new film titled Together Together, which also stars Ed Helms and Patti Harrison.

Pen15 Season 2, Part 2 is out on Hulu on Friday, December 3.
