Why is Richard Jefferson refereeing a Summer League game?

NBA Communications announced that former NBA champion and ESPN analyst Richard Jefferson will referee the second quarter of Monday’s Knicks-Trail Blazers Summer League game in Las Vegas.

“Richard Jefferson will officiate the second quarter of Monday’s New York vs. Portland game after attending daily NBA Summer League Officiating Meetings in Las Vegas. A former player turned broadcaster for ESPN, Jefferson has experienced how NBA referees prepare for games and execute that knowledge on the court,” NBA Communications wrote.

“He will then join the broadcast at halftime to discuss the experience.”

Jefferson has over 1,300 games played and 15,000 points scored in the NBA, so he has plenty of playing experience, but this will be a whole new lens for the former NBA champ.

Jefferson took to Twitter to explain why he wants to give refereeing a shot.

As mentioned above, you can tune into the halftime show on ESPN2 to hear what Jefferson has to say about his brief cameo as an NBA official.
